A Windows update should improve security and reliability, not turn a quick morning task into a wait for the spinning circle. If your PC running slow after update is affecting work, school or everyday use, the cause is often temporary – but it should not be ignored if the problem persists.

Updates change more than the visible version number. Windows may be finishing background jobs, installing drivers, rebuilding search indexes or discovering that an older application no longer behaves as expected. The right response is to check the obvious causes first, avoid risky shortcuts, and know when the slowdown points to a deeper fault.

Why a PC can run slow after an update

Immediately after a substantial Windows update, the computer may be busy even though you have reached the desktop. It can be downloading additional components, checking files, indexing documents for search, optimising installed apps and running security scans. This is more noticeable on older PCs with a traditional hard drive, limited memory or little free storage.

For many home users, this settles after a few hours of normal use and one or two restarts. For a business PC, however, even a short period of poor performance can disrupt calls, cloud applications and access to shared files. If the device remains slow the next working day, it needs a proper check rather than repeated guesswork.

A driver issue is another common cause. Drivers allow Windows to communicate with hardware such as graphics cards, printers, Wi-Fi adapters and storage devices. A new Windows version can expose an outdated driver, or Windows may install a generic replacement that works but performs poorly.

The name of the process matters. Do not end unfamiliar tasks merely because they use resources. Stopping a critical Windows process can cause instability or data loss. If a recognised Windows task is busy but usage gradually falls, let it finish. If disk use sits at 100 per cent for hours with no improvement, that is a useful clue for further diagnosis.

Check available storage

Windows needs breathing room to install updates and run normally. Open Settings, then System and Storage, to see how much space is free. A nearly full system drive can make even a capable PC feel unresponsive.

Remove files you no longer need, empty the Recycle Bin and move large photos or videos to approved cloud storage or an external drive. Businesses should take care not to delete records, client files or locally stored application data without checking retention requirements first. Storage clean-up is useful, but it is not a substitute for a verified backup.

Review startup applications

Updates can sometimes re-enable applications that launch when you sign in. In Task Manager, open Startup apps and review what is enabled. Disable non-essential items with a high impact, such as old update tools, chat software you no longer use or consumer applications that do not need to run all day.

Keep security software, essential business tools and drivers enabled unless you are sure of their purpose. If you are managing several office PCs, changes should be tested and documented rather than applied differently on every machine.

Fix the most likely causes safely

The following checks resolve many post-update performance problems without putting your files or security at unnecessary risk:

  • Run Windows Update again and install any follow-up updates, including optional driver updates only where they clearly match your hardware.
  • Update key drivers from the PC or hardware manufacturer, particularly graphics, chipset, network and printer drivers.
  • Run a full security scan using your trusted antivirus protection, especially if pop-ups, browser changes or unfamiliar programs appeared around the same time.
  • Check the drive for errors and monitor its health if the PC freezes, makes unusual noises or regularly shows 100 per cent disk activity.
  • Remove software you no longer need, but avoid so-called PC cleaner or registry cleaner tools. They frequently promise quick gains and can create instability instead.

For a device that became slow after a graphics driver change, rolling back the driver may be appropriate. Open Device Manager, find the relevant hardware, view its Properties and use the Driver tab if a previous version is available. This is usually safer than downloading a driver from an unverified website.

If the issue began immediately after a specific Windows update and basic checks have failed, uninstalling that recent update can be a sensible short-term measure. Use the Windows update history to identify it. Do this carefully: security updates exist for a reason, so removal should be temporary while the underlying compatibility issue is investigated. Signs the issue is more than normal update activity

A slow PC is less likely to fix itself if it repeatedly crashes, shows a blue screen, loses Wi-Fi, cannot find a printer or restarts without warning. The same applies when applications will not open, files disappear, Windows Update fails on every attempt or the machine is slow even in Safe Mode.

Older hardware can also reach a point where software fixes have limited effect. A PC with 4GB of memory, a mechanical hard drive or an ageing processor may cope poorly with current Windows versions and modern browser-based work. Replacing a hard drive with a solid-state drive and increasing memory can make a substantial difference, provided the device is otherwise reliable and supported.

For businesses, performance problems after updates may affect more than one endpoint. A shared issue can indicate a policy conflict, line-of-business application compatibility problem, antivirus configuration issue or network bottleneck. Treating each employee’s PC separately wastes time and can leave the actual cause unresolved. Centralised monitoring and a controlled update process provide a clearer picture.

Protect your data before bigger changes

Before resetting Windows, removing major updates or changing hardware, make sure important files are backed up and can be restored. Check that cloud-synchronised folders have fully completed their upload and that you can access key documents from another device. Do not assume a green tick means every local file is protected without checking.

A Windows reset can be effective when system files are damaged or years of unused software have built up. It is not the first answer to every slowdown, though. It can remove applications, alter settings and create downtime while business software, printers and security controls are reinstalled. A proper diagnosis first often avoids unnecessary disruption.
